What is VoIP or Internet telephony?
VoIP allows you to make telephone calls using the Internet. VoIP converts the voice
signal from your telephone into a digital signal(or packets) that travels over the
internet and then converts it back at the other end so you can speak to anyone with a regular phone number.
When placing a VoIP call using a phone with an adapter, you'll hear a dial tone and dial just as
you always have on a regular land line.
What type of Internet connection is needed and how is the quality?
For the VOIP to work nicely and to have good quality sound, a
broadband connection is essential. Typically, you wouldn't notice any
difference between the land line and VOIP. Occasionally the quality
maybe bad, due to pakets getting dropped or lost. Some providers have
bandwidth saver feature that improves sound quality to some extent. If
you still experience bad sound quality you may want to check with your ISP
about their promised upload and download speeds.
